do I need the original receipt? because with 3 year warranty it's easy to lose the receipt.

will I have to pay to ship the broken one to WD, Seagate, Hitachi or they cover that?

what's everybody experience? is it easy to get a replacement?

    thanks for the feedback

When you need to RMA a drive, they will ask for the Invoice number
If you bought the drive online, from say newegg, tiger direct, zipzoomfly, your invoice will be saved within your profile.
You also get a hard copy of the invoice with the package. You should scan the invoice and upload it to your desktop/laptop. Its always good to keep a copy.

When you need to go to RMA the drive, you also need to type in the serial number of the drive, which tells the manufacturer when the drive was made, when it left the factory and so forth.

All the info is found in those two places.

Things can become complicated if you do not have the invoice.

Well, try to get the invoice with any electronic device you purchase . It should not cost anything to the seller but it may save your life later...

On most warranty claims, you will need a receipt as proof of purchase. Drive could be stolen for all they know..

I just don't know if they'll be happy with an invoice from an ebay seller that might not be an official distributor

They dont care who the original owner is. If you have an invoice which matches the drive you have, you are set.
Now you must realize that the serial number contains a lot of information. If the drive is reported as stolen, the harddrive manufacturer will note that and attach that to that serial number. So if it was a stolen drive, and you try to RMA it, they will refuse RMA.

WIth the prices of harddrives so low, its best to buy them new.
