just wondering how much mileage i can get from the present mxm specification.
how long do you think it will last before we see gpu's adapt a new standard?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
I predict it will last as long as manufacturers can introduce something else to get our money.
Seriously. -
exactly.
but how long till they 'invent' the 'new tech' -
At least one more GPU generation after this current one that's about to end.
-
so it could be eol by 2012?

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Guess it should last until at least 2012, by then there would probaby be something interesting that would make you want to buy a new notebook.
-
It should last about 4 years. But with fewer to no top end mobile GPU comming out with it in it's PCB design.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
It should last until laptop GPUs eat more wattage (doubtful). That is the only reason I see MXM are ever updated.
-
yep. the only two real reasons to update mxm is for more power and/or a bigger memory bus.
with regards to power, it seems like 100watts(which the present standard can support) is the limit unless the manufacturers find some novel way of cooling the gpu.
however memory bus is simething that may be an issue for future cards. are the desktop gpus using larger bandwidth than 256-bit? -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Last generation Nvidia cards had 448-512 bit memory bus. Also GeForce 8 cards had 320/384 bit GPU. And dual GPU obviously.
I believe MXM 3.0b supports now 256 bit.. -
Good news, you can extend my prediction to at least two GPU generations after this current one that's about to end.

ah should last at least till the end of 2012 then
how long will mxm 3.0b last?
