My HP ze4400 has lasted 6 years so far. My Toshiba M-55 has lasted 4. And my Sony is just turning 1.

Have a dell 5610 that is 6 years old as a music server and a hp 8510 2 1/2 years old I hope lasts as long . They last if you maintain them , ie clean them out so they don't overheat . Most mine are on 24/7 , maybe that's why they last . Only turn them off if travelling or will not use for 2 or more days .
My sister replaces hers every 2 years cause they die on her , took a look inside one of the dead ones , was a jungle of dust and dirt , never cleaned out , any wonder it died ?

Most of my machines last a long time.

For me, laptops last generally between 3-4 years
Desktops last me anywhere up to about a decade.

My R50 and R51 have been like...7 years and still going strong, with a lot of abuses.

My T61 will last me a good while, probably 5+ years, same as my HP.

If you have had a laptop for more than 5 years, I assume you don't have warranty any more; doesn't worry you?

I think it varies on how you use your computer, some demand cutting edge hardware and software for playing new games and photo/video editing etc while others just want email and web browsing.

I've had my Dv1207us for nearly 5 years. I've upgraded it twice in those 5 years but i expect it to last for at least 2 more years before i consider getting a new one.

HP zv6123 - just turned four, surviving with major upgrades: 4200 rpm hard drive to 64 GB IDE SSD, 1 GB DDR333 to 2 GB DDR400 (which the good folks at HP managed to hamper by disabling dual-channel support) and Athlon 64 3200+ 130nm to Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego. Currently looking for an Opteron 156.

I have 3 year warranty on my T5010 but I doubt I'd use it unless some magical manufacturer default rises up.

I mean, I just found some old Pentium 4 and Pentium M laptops lying around my bf's dad's office(some were business laptops though, but still) so I can vouch that if taken care of, laptops can definitely last a long while.

Ditto. Hence why I do not buy warranties anymore. I had issues with my HP tx2510 once and got a motherboard replacement, but that was under the standard warranty. Now that Im on business only machines I do not worry much.

between my dv7t and my lenovo x200s from work, i feel like i wont *need* to buy another computer in 10 years... :) even my x41 - it's running windows ultimate just fine. i do little web surfing on it and use it for some test prep software but it's good enough for those purposes.

I have always told friends to buy "desktops" because it is easier to upgrade and repair.. Yet when its turn to upgrade my desktop components (Mobo, CPU, RAM) my unit becomes obsolete the only way to upgrade is BUY complete set!

Since 1996, I tried notebook. And in 2006 abandone desktops altogether.
In 1996, I got an Acer, partially using till 2000 when I replaced it.
In 2000, I got another Acer - it lasted till 2005 when it completely failed.
In 2004, I got a Twinhead - though still running, some parts are no longer functioning circa 2007.
In 2006, I got a Compaq T2200 - to date still running. Bluetooth has decayed, wont accept battery, wont accept CD readers as well. I cant go mobile with this so I gave it to the kids for facebook.
In Dec 2009, I bought M15x and Q850 hoping them to last 3 years.

My laptops are often times on the go: home and anywhere I go. I do handle them with care though.

One thing I realized: Acer suck!

I had one Toshiba Portege 7020 (manufactured in 1999 or 2000).
Used it for about 5 years, later gave it to a friend.
It might be still working in his hands.... pretty good ultra-thin.
