    how much longer you think 2gb will still be considered enough to do stuff? I know some notebooks are making the motherboards capable of 4gb and obviously right now thats overkill for most users, but how much longer you think it will take for 2gb to be looked down upon kind of like when 512 was considered a lot now its kind of the bare minimum you want. you think like 1-2 years 2gb will be looked upon like that?

    EDIT: should I base my notebook I buy on whether the motherboard can handle 2 or 4gb of ram? im not a gamer, just use adobe products like photoshop, illustrator, surf the net, download, etc i hope im not making a mistake buying a notebook not capable of 4gb of ram :l

    Well I personally think some people will upgrade their 2GB RAM once Vista comes out with aero glass enabled. At the moment if I run a few apps and play games a lot then I can hit a peak of 1.7GB RAM so I'll imagine when Vista comes out and I'll feel more comfortable with 3GB (hopefully a new laptop by then).

    Put it this way I believe when Vista comes out people who are comfortable with x memory they have now may upgrade to y memory.
    512MB ---> 1GB+
    1GB ---> 2GB+
    2GB ---->3GB or 4GB

    for at least a full year, 2 GB will be more than enough, and by the end of 2007, ram prices will fall enough that 4GB will be an easy upgrade

    If you ask me, its shotty programming when a game requires over 1GB of RAM. Games like Battlefield, and FEAR. There is no reason a game should require 1GB of system RAM, especially when you have a top notch system. Its ridiculous.

    3D applications like Maya, Pro/E...etc I understand though.

    I dont get all the Aero Glass hype, I got my XP set up looking like win98, and its fine for me. Performance over Fashion.

    Yeah I agree with you, but more on the OS side of things. Vista on my freinds laptop idled at 1gb. That alone will thrash 75% of pc's out there, and that is just ridiculous. When I choose to game I know I wont have anything open except for the game and av stuff, so thats not of concern.

    I think 2gb will be suficient for a few more years to come. But as history has shown us it wont be top anymore. But 2gb as a minimum spec I doubt will happen for a few more years.

    2gb will not be a minimun req until the OS after vista is released. If u think about it, the minimum of ram went up as OSes got released. When 95 came out, it was 16mb, when 98 came out that got bumped to 64, when 2k came out, the new min was 128, when XP came out the new min was 256, and now when vista comes out, the new min will be 512/1gb. So if ur a regular computer user, 2gb will not be the minimum for quite a while now. If u game hardcore or use heavy 3D apps, then 2gb is already the minimum.
