how often do you defrag i do it once a month if that
-
-
When i use Diskeeper ten its set to defrag every two days on auto. Otherwise just whenever i install a video game or delete lots of files.
-
Hm, about every 2 months.

Every month (sometimes a little more). Mostly for maintenance reasons...I never notice any slowdowns.
-
Once every 3 months for me, eventhough my PC said "NO".
-
yeah alot of times u need to defrag even if it tells u not to
-
Hmmm, if seen a 20 points increase in 3Dmarks when defragging after bout -+ 3 months ago...
-
Once a week or more... I have so many scattered files as well as backups on my 2x 160GB HD's.
-
thats crazy lol.why dont u just get a external and put them on that, that way you can have ur space on ur notebook for whatever. thats what i do.
-
at least once a month if not more. I am constantly adding and removing files so my HD is packed with frag files at the end of the month.
-
what program do you use to defrag: the built in one or a 3rd part app?
-
Once every eight months - I rarely feel a slowdown....guess I keep the notebook really lean and mean.
Back in the pre-XP days (Win 95, 98, Me) it was nearly weekly. -
Where is the "whenever I do major file moving operations such as copying many files over or deleting a bunch of information" option? Heh. That's when you really need to worry about it.
-
In Windows: Once a week (using NTFS)
In Linux: Never (ext3 rocks) -
So... what exactly is Defragging anyway? I stumbled across it one day while exploring windows XP (Just got a new computer), but I didn't really understand it so I left it alone.
-
A process (run by a defragging program) whereby parts of data files on all segments of a computer hard disk are taken from their fragmented state (with parts of files spread all over the disk), and grouped together in complete-file segments. This makes it quicker for applications to find the files they need and frees up disk space, making the computer run more efficiently.
I only need to defrag about 1-2 month. If you working on just docments, you dont need to defrag not that much, since you are working alittle bits of files. Now, if you are working on way bigger file such as video or install something thats requires to have huge amount of space, then yes, you have to defrag often.

Diskeeper, on my Desktop and X60, runs under "Smart Scheduling" so it defrags when the HDD starts to degrade below optimum performance. Very un-intrusive and does it on the background. Sometimes I don't even notice it even when playing games.

once every 3 months...

Just did it last night but it doesn't seem to have had the effect I was hoping for!
-
6 months, which isn't a choice (surprisingly).
-
Well, many people defrag around once per day or after installing something. Then, it takes a couple of minutes. I on the other hand, do it only when I can be bothered.
-
In order to get a better performance, i will do it often when i don't need to work with it.
-
Never defrag, not when you have like 4 hdd with 800gb+ of files. Takes forever. Plus I have my windows system files on 1 specific hdd so that I would never need to defrag it. Even if I need to defrag, it will just be that 1 hdd.
Only time I'll defrag is probably when I can feel that the files are fragmented and the game / movie etc is taking longer to load up. -
It has been a while because I have not had enough space free.
-
I chose 5 months.
I don't see any real benefit to me other than that. Unless I delete a lot of files when I download clips and discard them after one time watch. As long as I have more than 20% free space, I don't see any need to defrage HDD at all. Remember, one defragment process equal many folds of writing almost entire HDD space.
I know a studid pal totally destroy his IBM HDD just because he like the defrag too much, one defrag every other week, one system reinstallation every month. After one year, he had to send his T42 back for a new HDD. -
Atleast twice a month, and if I'm have been moving, adding/removing files then I'll do it twice a week.
