how can one check what kind of memory he is using without opening the notebook?

www.crucial.com has a model selector that will tell you what ram you need.
Also, it's not really that hard to "open" it and look. It's typically one screw and one panel to lift up on the bottom. -
hmmm usually you cant but programs like CPU-Z might give you the make of chips at least

Everest Home Edition (free) or CPU-Z. Both give a lot of details.
