I was given a Compaq Presario 18XL580 Notebook with no adapter or power cord, so I bought one now I'm installing windows XP onto the notebook. How do I partition the hard drive for a laptop, should I delete all files on the hard drive before installation, because the computer keeps locking up on me,is it because of the info already on the hard drive that makes it lock-up or what? I could use some help at this point!!

If their is any important information on the harddrive, you should back up your files on a memory card.
When upgrading from ME to XP, it is best to format the harddrive in NTFS (its an option when installing XP) and than from their you will be able to install XP.
Obviously once you format all of the files/software on the drive disappears, so you will need to reinstall the software you need onto the drive after the format and installation of XP.
