I just purchased an IBM X40 (no optical drives) and I dont have any money to purchase anything else like an external drive or additional cables. But I do have a few extra external drives, a usb extension cord, and an IDE cable layin around. Ive been searching the web all morning trying to find a site for this, but obviously i was unsuccessful. Basically, this is what i need to make: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.a...l_CjCbpw Al_&gclid=CLi6-6KwwooCFQi9VAod5hB6lA
Theres gotta be an instructional site out there for this. PLEEEASE HEELP! I want to watch dvds and burn cds on my laptop! I have very good soldering skills, so i just need some good instructions.

    thanks

You cannot just do a simple cable to cable conversion between IDE and USB. There needs to be a controller chip in between the IDE to USB path which allows the computer to control the HD once plugged in.

You can do this relatively cheaply by buying an adapter:

Those adapters might not work as you need an IDE Controller Chip. Can't you plug the device directly into your laptop?
