i got this laptop as a replacement for one of my other laptops that broke. HP said that they coudlnt fix it in a timely manner and would just replace it.
anyway:
my laptop seems like it skips a beat sometimes, it just freezes for a second or two. the thing is, the hard drive soudns like its overspinning, and makes a very loud like whirring sound. when i looked at the resource monitor, the Highet active time on the disk would spike to 100% (this is when the freezes occur). they occur at times when im not even using the laptop, its just sitting idle. any way to fix it?

New hard drive, probably. First I would try a fresh install.
