    Hi
what software are you using to burn the discs. are all the discs you are trying to read the same make of disc. people have had problems in the past with + & - discs even though most new drives should read both + & - now as they are multi readers.
cant guarantee it will help but it might be worth trying one of the free software in my signature below.
try the ashampoo software which is the first one on the list.

If it can't read disks (and a driver update or re-install doesn't fix this) it is time for a new optical drive.

This would sound the most plausible senario since the OP has mention problems that would indicate a failing drive hardware. And since we don't know the exact drive that is also hard to know what fixes they could be told to try to find what might be the problem. HP does have a serial tag similiar to Dell that would give others a more exact model and what hardware is there to know what they should look for.

ive had major problems with power 2 go for years now. its the only bit of cyberlink software that doesnt want to work properly. same as you tried many variations of discs. sometimes it would just crash and stop working and other times it would burn and work fine and play on various other drives other times it would burn and finalize but there was nothing on the disc. i changed software and havnt had a problem since.

Would this software actually prevent reading the disks though (doubtful)?

I'm with tilleroftheearth on this one. It's time for a new optical drive.
