    Ok this is what happened.

My laptop has been making huge noise from the fan, so I planned to open it up and clean it from scratch. Which I did, but after i reassembled it, it worked for some time then the display is lost. All i see is black screen with matrix sorta lines changing colors and all..
So i left it for a couple of days, as I was busy with some thing else. Yesterday night I tried starting it, it worked fine. then again today when I restarted it booted fine with good display but went back to that matrix screen in a minute.. and any number of restarting is not helping.

The system is working in the background, just lost the display..

I did some online search but never came across the this situation..

I have exams shortly and I desperately need my laptop! please help!

Sounds like you might have damaged the ribbon cable that connects the motherboard to the monitor. Were you grounding yourself when you were messing with the insides? Is this laptop still under warranty?

truly, i opened the thing up on my bed. And I did not take any extra precautions to ground myself or the lappy... (did not know about that!)
And the laptop is out of warranty!

Thanks angelic for the response, I really must have done good research, apart from the youtube video about opening and cleaning the lappy..
So, regarding the present situation, can I resolve the issue?!

Well since you shorted out the video chip or damaged the ribbon cable carrying the video signal, there isn't much you can really do. You can call HP and ask for a repair estimate if you want, maybe see how much it would be for them to look at it. Or take it to a computer repair shop if you have one near you. I'm not sure how old your laptop is, but if it's more than a few years old, I wouldn't bother. I'd be looking for a new one.

Ah well i called the HP and to even address the issue they are quoting in excess of $300. It surely would be a complete rip off..
I wish I could do some thing myself.
and regarding the ribbon you mentioned, is it the cable that connects the monitor to the motherboard? I have an spare old HP compaq laptop, was wondering if I could get the part from the compaq...

You can't usually swap out parts from different laptops. But I suppose you can try, I just worry you'll damage it even more. But since you aren't paying to get it fixed, it's up to you. I'm not 100% sure it's the ribbon cable, FYI.

it sounds like the cable, i had a similar problem with a Clevo D900t, and it would show lines through the display at random times. its a concern though that since it works intermittently it could be the graphics chip and 95% of the time its not worth repairing it, most places(even local shops) will charge you a ton to fix it, and likely dont have the expertise to do it correctly. if this is a oldr laptop, i would just get a replacement if plausible.

right now, i connected my friends monitor to mine, the same problem shows up. So, can I conclude that it is not the cable problem? as I used a different monitor and cable to connect to my motherboard resulting in no change..
As you said, it works intermittently, it could be a display chip problem! but am hopeful if I can repair it somehow.
i did some search online (ebay) for a new motherboard (exact model no) and it costs somewhere around 150 bucks.
Is it worth the money? would it solve the problem? is the motherboard on ebay anywhere good?

    thanks for the responses!

I did consider going for a new lappy, but I bought my present laptop with best configuration available 3 years back - 2.4 gigs, nvidia card, 4 gb ram et al.. for 1300 bucks, so some how want to make it work!

Can you explain a little more about what you mean by this "so I planned to open it up and clean it from scratch. Which I did, but after i reassembled it"

Did you dismental your entire laptop? or just removed the CPU cover so you can access the fan and the heatsink and clean them?

Did you remove the AC adapter and the battery when you took your laptop apart?

$150 is not a bad price for a mobo. If you take your time you might even be able to buy it for cheaper.

Well at least we narrowed down the problem, it's not the cable, since the issue showed up on a different monitor. Has to be the GPU/Mobo. Still, not much you can do.

I had a DV6500. It was a complete pain in the backside to disassemble and put back together correctly, and I have cracked open a lot of laptops. If you don't know exactly what you are doing, it would be very easy to leave something partially connected or break one of the many ribbon cables. In addition these are well know for their video display problems. I have done a couple of mobo swaps on these and there a a lot of bits an pieces to this notebook. I could do it in about an hour, I'd plan on 2 hours for a first time swap, but this is not something for someone who doesn't know exactly what they are doing....

It remainds me of the the DV9700 series. What a pain in the neck just to get to the CPU. All the laptop had to be taken apart.

well u do have a faulty NVDIA GPU... it might be dieing...also overheating... might have dead screen... 100s of problems possible... its not worth repairing it for $300... u might as well save the money and buy a new laptop... it really looks like a dieing GPU to me...

These definitely came with the defective nvidia gpus. There is a website called hplies.com that talks deals specifically with it. There have been people who were quoted $300 and were able to get it fixed free (with a little bit of arguing). Problem is they fix it with the same defective gpu/motherboard. So choices are get it fixed (will happen again eventually), buy a new computer, or sue hp (people have done so and won).
