Hello everyone... I was given an hp pavilion laptop (zd7058cl) as a wedding present from my brother. Here are the specs: P4 2.8Ghz, 512MB RAM PC2700(333), 80 Gig 4200 rpm hd, NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5600 64MB video, cd burner, harman/kardon speakers w/ Conexant AMC Audio, LAN and modem, Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN, 17" widescreen. Overall, a very nice laptop. I also formatted and tweaked it almost as soon as I got it with Win XP Pro w/SP2. It runs pretty fast but I have started doing upgrades to make it even faster. The first was to upgrade it to 2GB of RAM, which I did today, and to be honest with you, I haven't noticed much of an overall system improvement thus far. My next move may be to upgrade it from it's current 4200 rpm hd to 7200 rpm. How much of an impact do you guys think that will have? Is upgrading from a 4200 rpm to a 7200 rpm gonna make a significant difference or a negligible one? Any other suggestions on what I could do to improve my laptop would be greatly appreciated. I use it mostly for surfing, Office applications, email... but I also play games like Madden 06, Diablo II, and C&C on it as well. - Bobby

Upgrading from a 4200 rpm to a 7200 rpm will make a significant improvement on just about anything that has to do with the hard drive. Faster load times, boot times, etc.. Read this article from laptoplogic to get a better understanding.

Upgrading from a 4200 rpm drive is definately going to give you a performance upgrade that you will notice. Basically all loading from Windows startup to games will load faster. I would recommend going for an 80 or 100GB 5400 rpm hard drive for a nice performance upgrade that will give you close to 7200 rpm speed without a hefty price tag. The 7200 rpm drive is mainly only a noticable change when you do a lot of video editing and such that requires constant reading/writing from/to the hard drive. But you can get a 100GB 5400 drive for about $80-100 less than the 7200 rpm drives. Western Digital and Hitachi make some of the best hard drives.
