i know i know....i'm cheap...i'd rather call myself frugal, but i know you'd call me cheap.

i bought a used battery on ebay for my emachines(cheap) m5405.....is there any thing that needs to be done before installing it?
i see my laptop recognizing the battery(in power options, control panel) but when i unplug the power adapter it simply shuts down as if there was no battery at all...
    i'd appreciate any help,thanks

You don't need to install the new battery, no. :)

All you need to do is take out the battery you have in there now (there should be a latch or some sort of device that holds the battery in) and put in the "new" used one. You can do this while the laptop is off or even while it is plugged in.

It's odd that the laptop just shuts down. Try shutting down the laptop and then trying to boot it up off of battery.

Odd indeed. Or more like DOA (hope not though). Put the 'new' battery in, plug the laptop into the wall for a couple hours. Then see if it runs without being plugged in, if it doesn't, well then you got a dud on your hands. Welcome to Ebay.
