For the built-in Vista utility, go to Start> Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Memory Diagnostics Tool. A prompt will show up asking if you want to restart; this is necessary because, in order to fully test the RAM it must be unused by the OS.

MSFT Software Engineer or not, my 32-bit Vista pulls up 3.6gb.

Too bad MSFT doesn't have a tool that makes the 32-bit to 64-bit Vista transition seamless :(

The amount of ram you end up depends on how your motherboard does the hardware mapping.

Different hardware will give you different results varying from 3 to 3.7ghz

32-bit Vista can recognize, theoretically, up to 3.5GB. After that, it's system-by-system as to how much is recognized in Windows itself. I beleive it depends on your chipset, BIOS, and possibly even Windows Vista system settings.
