You've got me confused. Are you trying to put an SATA HDD into a notebook with a PATA interface? It won't fit. SATA gives little benefit to notebooks. HDD transfer rates are within the PATA interface ceiling while SATA increases the idle power consumption. You can get up to 250GB in PATA using the WD2500BEVE.

If you are wanting to clone your HDD then I suggest this enclosure which takes both PATA and SATA plus download the trial version of Migrate Easy from Acronis.

PS: I'm not sure how well Migrate Easy handles Vista and it's different boot files. The alternative is the True Image 11 trial (which incorporates the cloning function of Migrate Easy).

    Sorry, I missed the link.

This Newlink enclosure is cheap and versatile. However, it is not the smallest because it has a board with connectors for both types of HDD. It will also support SATA <> eSATA which is useful future-proofing.

Otherwise just look around for a PATA / IDE to USB 2.0 enclosure. This one is a good price, but currently not in stock. Here's one at ebuyer.
