Hi, i think my harddisk drive is really going to die real soon, the harddisk is making funny croaking/scraping noises constanly.

i've backed up my data to an external USB HDD i had.

now, the question; i've successfully transfer all the data and files. is it possible that the data is corrupt/altered during the transfer? or is there some sort of error checking going on when i copy my data?

the harddisk drive is 500GB Western digital SE16 and the external USB HDD is FreeAgent Pro 500GB

I have never seen that...If you see the data on the external drive and trying to access random files work, there shouldn't be any problem with the backup data

Have you tried opening the files on another machine? If they work, they should be fine. I would burn as much to dvd-r also just in case the external drive is corrupt. There is nothing wrong with a little redundancy protection.

thanks guys... it is wholly weird this Western Digital drive... i have run all sort of test and stress it, yet it still shows no error... i just hope it is the characteristic of the drive it self. i just find out that the drive features a "Data Lifeguard™" thing... supossedly it scan the HDD for error every 8 hour i turn on the HDD, so it might explain the croaking noise becuase the head feature a variable speed...
