Hitachi 7200RPM Travelstar models are highly regarded for the best performance vs. price, low noise/vibration and power consumption.

also worth having a look at ssd drives as they are a lot faster than spindle drives but will be quite a bit dearer.
last time i checked samsung have the fastest read/write speed.

when new. as OP doesnt say if new or old computer how do we know.
and it doesnt have to be a new computer to upgrade to a ssd.

depends on the OP max budget and country.
we could post lots but need more of an idea what country and what they need it for.
for first post they dont give much info so difficult to answer.

MrDJ, the 'when new' post by alexhawker is not about whether or not the system is new.

It is about whether an Samsung SSD is fast... and when new, it is. ;)

lol... and what do those user ratings mean to me?

    Hint; nothing. :)

I've used Samsung drives from 2010, and I was even duped (by myself) to buy some a year ago.

Don't need 'scores' to tell me they don't compare to other/better drives. In either responsiveness (after a few days/weeks of use) or actual, sustained 'heavy' usage.

Last I check Windows 7 and on had TRIM feature enabled to better utilize the SSD drives. Also for boot drive SSD is night and day compared to HDDD. For storage for now til SSD becomes 10tb and priced like HDD - HDD is mainly for my usage is storage that the area HDD still rules for some time to come even if SSD becomes 10tb that will be one expensive SSD.

Must not read much about SSD and Windows 7 and on do we? TRIM is enabled helping Windows keep the SSD in peak performance. One should read up about the TRIM and how it helps SSD performance.

    Make assumptions much?

As Tiller said, I was responding to MrDJ's recommendation of all Samsung SSDs as the fastest, despite all the slowdown issues with the 840's.

Your own post #5 doesn't make it clear what was your reply was for. New or already running SSD will always be faster then HDD and with Windows 7 TRIM enabled this provides extra boost the SSD lifespan usage.
