Hey everyone, I'm wondering if upgrading the CPU in my G46vw to an i7 3630qm is worth it.

It'll cost me ~$200 to get a 3630qm, and I can sell my 3210m for around $90-$100. is it worth it to upgrade for around $100?

Will I see a good performance difference in games when playing with a GTX 660m? I mostly play BF3, Guild Wars 2, and Crysis 3. Would these be games I would notice a good jump with fps in?

I'm just hoping to get some answers before making my purchase.

    Thanks everyone!
    Jessekin.

The games you play are mostly GPU-limited, but the processor upgrade should provide some overall improved system performance, especially in multitasking.

Basically, with the upgrade you're looking at 10% better single-core and dual-core performance, as well as 2 extra cores for additional threads or processes. I'd say do it if you can afford the upgrade.

I would do it. All 3 games you mentioned are heavily CPU-bound (Guild wars is a MMO - when multiple characters are on-screen you need a strong CPU. BF3 is a multiplayer game with lots of simultaneous players. you need a strong CPU. crysis most of all LOVES cores), and you will probably feel the performance increase quite heavily with an increase in cores.

Guild Wars 2 eats CPUs for breakfast (and the community has been complaining about bad optimization), if you want to get anything considered playable at high resolutions during zergs, either WvW or dragon events, you'll see a difference with that quad core.

Where are you finding the i7 for $200? I have the G46vw and would like to upgrade mine in the future.

    Thanks,
    Philip

Since the CPU is the only thing in this case that can postivley affect your fps in games, then yeah it will be a noticeable upgrade for the games you mentioned, especially BF3. The difference won't be outstanding by any means, but there will be improvement.
