So my mates decided to build a rigg again and needs some cash. He offered to sell me his i7 720QM from his 3 week old g51. The deal is that I give him my i5 430m and $230NZ. I am only concerned about the performance difference between these two cpu's gaming wise. From the benchies i've seen it seems the i5 and the i7 performance very similarly and the difference is almost negligible at times. So is it worth spending this extra amount of cash? Will I see an improvement within my games?

P.S I play ALL new gen games and i plan to do so for the next 2-3 yrs. Games i play currently are BC2, SC2, Cod4+mw2 and source. I will be playing any upcoming games.

    Thanks guys

they will perform the same as most games are gpu bound
i cant comment on the price as i dont know how much in usd 230nz is.
well if you want to help your mate go ahead, but you will see minimal to no effect on games.
also be sure that your laptop motherboard will acept the i7 quad

Your 430m is worth about $100. The 720QM is worth $220. So maybe your 430m and $120.

Make sure that it's the PGA988 version, because the i7-720QM comes in two pin varieties, and the 1288-pin version won't fit.

Also, make sure your laptop can handle the heat output of the i7.

i5-430M is a 32nm/35W chip, i7-620M is the 32nm/35W TDP chip. Both have an onboard GPU for switchable graphics capable chipsets. i7-720M is the 45nm/45W chip with no onboard GPU.

If your friend wants better battery life then he should be offering you the older i7-720M+cash to take the newer i5 from you.

    QFT. The GX640 shipped only with i5 CPU's, didn't it? The 720QM is a 45W CPU, whereas the 430M is only 35W. That's a large thermal difference.

It looks like XoticPC will configure the GX640 with an i7-720QM though, so I'm guessing you'll be ok.

$230NZ is roughly $160US. You guys still think its worth it? Also im very sure the gx640 can handle the heat output of the i7.

Not imho. IHeat is the main contributor to devices failing. I'd trade up to a cooler and more power efficient 32nm i7-620M off ebay.

Negligible in most cases. Especially if you are able to overclock your CPU, you should be able to pass 2.6GHz fairly easily.

If the laptop is able to handle 45W of heat from an i7 it'll be able to handle 45W of heat from an overclocked i5.

That deal you were offerred is spectacularly bad, sounds like your "mate" just wants to separate you from your money.
