I'm looking to get the Clevo W230ST right now and I am wondering how much of a difference I will notice if I get the i5-4210M instead of the i7-4700M. I will mostly use it for doing HW, but will also be using it for gaming quite a bit. The i5 saves me $150 which is a lot for me.

Why buy last years model when you can buy the 860m model for the same amount ? I bought my machine from them as have many other members on the board. Get the quadcore if you truly plan on doing quite a bit of gaming. More games are using quadcore and those lists just keep getting larger.

Agreed with the poster above; avoid old tech. What's your total budget?
To answer your original question, the i7-4700MQ is considerably more powerful than the dual-core i5-2410M and you will notice a difference in games like Battlefield 4. As a matter of fact, a lot of new games are recommending quad-core processors; this is a trend that will only continue. -
Yep. You can get a stock W230SS with 860m and i7-4710MQ for not much more than that W230ST with i7 and 765m...
LPC Digital as noted above, you won't regret it! -

Or wait a couple months as there will likely be a 9x0m refresh.

At least wait two weeks. The 970m may make a presence in the W230 before mid October.

There is a very real possibility that a w230ss model with the 970m will be released because it was actually originally designed for the much hotter 65W TDP GTX 765M. The current GTX860m is only rated for 45W so I believe it is worth waiting. We might also see a faster 65W GTX 960m at the very least.

I would love to get a 192-bit GPU in the 13" form factor though.

i7 Quad + MXM or ~75W onboard GPU + two M2 SSD (get rid of the 2.5) in that W230 shell would make a great portable. -
It will likely be soldered, but I can live with that. I used to get MXM laptops but they never really worked out the way I thought they would. Not quite as "plug and play" as a desktop PCI-e GPU, although I don't know why they don't make them that way.

Soldered or not, where can I get a W230 sized device with i7 Quad, FirePro M6100, twin M2 SSD, WWAN/GNSS, dual fans connected to heat pipes of reasonable length, and a 9-cell swappable battery in the front?
It seems to technically so easy and yet so unreachable.
