Looking at upgrading the cpu in my laptop and have seen an intel i7 2840qm but cannot find any specs for it.does any one have any.my choice is between i7 2840qm or i7 2760qm.Only thing i can find is bench tests showing it above the 760 which is why i am looking at it, as it is around the same price.

The first and most important question is for which laptop and which CPU are you upgrading from?

2840qm probably is a qs/es. the seller or intel name them according to the cache size/clock speed but they are not official released specs.

As long as the motherboard is the same between the i5 and i7, it should work without any issues. Also, make sure that you have a heatsink that can handle it, some laptops have different heatsinks depending on which DPU is in it (like my M6700).

Unfortunately for the OP, there's a good chance the motherboard isn't the same. The dual-core W-series support 2 SODIMMs, the quad-core models support 4.

I think it is kind of silly to have different boards just because of the processor, most SB model board can handle i7 if they take i5. Owner from owner thread probably more sure.

. I have checked in build manual it is the same board and double checked my board and it has 4 slots. when using 2 core you put dimms in correct slots or it will not work, so i am happy everything is ok. i also checked part no on fan/cooler incase it was smaller but it is the same as 45w so good to go. Thankyou all for your input.

HP does that with their elitebooks (or used to), Dell has the same board across all precisions i think and i if you have the 4 sockets on the Lenovo, then you should be good to go.

Good thing you checked the motherboard because I was about to suggest that too; my EliteBook is the same way.

The i7-2840QM doesn't officially exist according to Intel:
    2nd Generation Intel® Core

Any of the i7 quad-core processors compatible with your notebook are going to be a big upgrade power-wise compared to the i5. An i7-2630QM would probably be cheapest (or 2670QM though that model is likely to fetch a few dollars more).

Fantastic - thanks for reporting back. That will help others contemplating this upgrade.

For the record I'm jealous of your upgrade. :)
