Hi all,
I am thinking of upgrading to a i7-820/840 or even a 920XM. I'm not sure which to go for yet because it depends on the price but I have been looking and have found a seller on ebay selling a range of i7 processors as well as other components. The seller has very good feedback and all the feedback from the people who have bought the i7's is positive. However the prices seem very good almost too good to be true. Just looking for some advice on whether to go for it or not. Here's a link to the 840QM... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160449169438&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Thanks

Just seen it's an Qualification Sample. Would you say it's worth it still. I've read they are almost identical to production CPU's.

read a few recent threads about individuals getting screwed when they bought es or qs cpus.
I'm willing to bet a few $$ that for every user here that feels compelled to brag about the deal they got on a 'functional' es/qs cpu, there are a dozen or more people who are embarrassed about the hosing they got with their 'deals'.
It's your $300-500 -
If I bought it and done some intense testing for 24 hours and it came out fine would you say it would be worth keeping?
-
It's your money...... Don't forget that you need a better heatsink/fan layout and you'll get lessened runtime on battery.

720,740,820,840 all have 45w TDP.

In this thread people are saying the QS chips are more or less OEM chips, while the ES ones are usually the ones to be cautious of.

do the temps sensors work on these?
-
If it is a QS, its the same thing as OEM, only that they might void your warranty if you send the laptop for repair with that CPU in it...
Not sure if it was a good deal... normally ES CPUs tend to lower in price after a while. I also recommend people to be cautious of ES CPU's as they might not have temp sensors in it. -
temp sensors, cache, floating point units, etc, etc, etc.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I will bother. I a bit worried about it.
-
Just be sure to research the CPU's sSpec.

I've personally used both OEM and QS/ES 920XM and I could positively say that the QS/ES chips are running hotter than the OEM and produces some errors when stress-tested, heck I even tried 3 920XM QS/ES chips and they all had the same result.
i7 DEAL??
