Hi, there I have a Sony vaio C that has the i7-2620M, I was not sure if it would be possible to upgrade to a i7-2630QM? I'm a little confused as to there being different socket names but also read that they are compatible.

Would love to go up to four cores as I'm doing a lot of high poly modelling and game design.

    Thanks in advance

    Oli

As long as the CPU isn't soldered on the main board, you should be fine.

Physically you should be good, as long as the CPU isn't soldered on, as was mentioned.
