I'm considering buying a new laptop, and i'm looking at one with an i7 2720QM (2.2ghz up to 3.1).
now, i already have a 13.1 inch vaio with an i5 520m 2.4ghz up to 2.93, and its fan never failed to cool it down during the 2 years i've owned it, then again it's a sony laptop, they do know how to make quality laptops (from my experience anyway).
So here's the question, how good can i expect a 15.5 inch laptop to cool down the mentioned i7?, will i have to turn down the maximum processor state to keep it from overheating (it's an HP)?
p.s: mainly using it for gaming.

shrugs it is a cause by cause scenario. You should post what laptop it is...someone might have it....best to post in HP section

It all depends on the laptop.
Does it have 1 fan for both CPU and GPU or 2 fans (1 for each)?
How big are the heatsinks?
Is the model known to have good contact between the heatsinks and the die's?
Are you willing to do some routine maintenance? (clearing vents, repasting if needed, etc) Do you have the knowledge or confidence to perform such tasks?
There is no real one solution to your question. There are too many factors that will affect a laptop's cooling. Some user related and some manufacturer related. -
It all depends on the cooling system of the laptop.
