    Hi all. I am in the process of customizing and buying a Sony Vaio F Series laptop, and I need to decide between the following (for money reasons):

    i7-2630QM w/8GB ram or i7-2720WM w/6GB ram?

    I plan to multitask with many windows open, but I am not going to be doing anything major on my computer. Which one is preferable, or is it worth it to wait to upgrade both? (The processor can be upgraded to i7-2820QM)

    Thanks!

    Not doing anything major? Money reasons? Multi-tasking?

    8GB RAM.

    I can only afford both, so i am either going with the upgraded processor, or the upgraded ram. I won't be doing any video editing or anything, just basic movies, music, some light gaming.

    By multitasking, I simply meant that I like to have lots of things open at the same time-multiple web browsers, a media player, a movie, itunes,

    This is hardy a fair comparison.

    The 2630QM -> 2720QM is a ~$150 upgrade.

    6 GB -> 8 GB is a $25 upgrade.

    If you can afford the 2720QM, you can afford the 8 GB.

    And lol for what you're doing, which is "light" multitasking, you can get away with 4 GB. Heck even 2 GB if you're on XP.

    From what I understand, The 2720QM (I assume the WM is a typo) is slightly faster processor and will allow higher clock ram 1333Mhz -> 1600Mhz, so if you want to in the future, you can upgrade to "better" ram. The 6GB to 8GB ram upgrade will probably not do a whole lot for you since your doing very light activities.

    If you plan on upgrading in the future, the 2720QM might be more useful, but really I can't see the benefit of upgrading either the ram or cpu for your computer. If you don't have SSD, that would have the most noticeable impact on your laptop.

    Don't quote me on anything since I am fairly new to this too :)

    As 2hvy4grbty pointed out the comparison is not a straight apples to apples. The difference in price between the i7-2630 and the i7-2720 in most situations is higher than the difference between 6GB and 8GB of RAM.

    If Sony is somehow offering these as a bundle with the same price impact, I would go for the i7-2720 and upgrade the RAM on my own if needed ($25 upgrade). Upgrading RAM is also easier.

    The processor upgrade might set you back ~$100 - $120 and it involves a little more than popping out a few screws..

    I'd get the second option with the processor upgrade anytime. Easy to upgrade RAM by yourself in 5 mins. Much harder and almost impossible to upgrade processors in some cases.

    If you aren't doing anything major with your computer, get neither and save your money... if you can, get the minimum amount of memory and buy a kit or additional stick from a computer store such as Newegg.

    If these are preconfigured models for the same price, definitely go with the i7-2720QM w/ 6GB RAM. It may be helpful to tell us what you're going to be running on your computer, though, so we can give more accurate and case-specific advice.

    Agreed. you'll notice a bigger differance with the better CPU as 2720QM has a good jump in clocks and "fully" supports 1600MHz. Though SSd is best upgrade especially SataIII ones.

    Of course take 2730QM. As said above it can use faster RAM 1600 - 1866 Mhz and gives you real performance.
    About RAM: if you can I suggest you to buy as less memory as you can. And make aftermarket upgrade fpr HyperX RAM.
    this 4GB you can sell on eBay for 25-35 backs.
