I have HP dv5204ea, which has i940GML chipset, that supports according to the intel`s homepage only celeron M 400 & 500 series.
But is it possible, to use 533 fsb Core Duo&Solo with this chipset.
Has everyone tried it?
Thanks...

Hi,
Unfortunately you cannot install anything but Celerons in that laptop:
http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/940gml/index.htm
It does not support any other processors. -
Well, i have read that intel`s official page thousand times, but has anybody tried it?
-
Sure, but they probably got stuck when they tried to insert the chip into the socket because they don't physically match...
-
Why should they? I tried Yonah T2300. It fitted perfectly and notebook turned on, but no boot, becaus T2300 has 667 fsb. Aren`t the sockets of all Yonah and Merom based cpu-s same?

The Intel Core Duo chips need to be seated in Socket M type sockets, which is an altered version of the Socket 479 that most Pentium M's use. In fact Intel changed the pinout of the Socket M with the explicit intention of making it incompatible with older Pentium M's and vice versa. I'm sure they were kind enough to place the power and ground pins away from each other on the two socket designs, but if they weren't then you could fry something.
The point is, if the 940GML officially supports only Pentium M's, then it will have a Socket 479 pin configuration, and thus will not handle any Core Duo's. The new low end 533Mhz FSB T2050 & T2250 Core Duo's will not likely use Socket 479 either.
EDIT: Just saw that it's Celeron M---which is admittedly just a watered down Core or Core2 depending on the series, probably uses Socket 478. Still doubt it's pin compatible though. -

The Celeron-M 300 uses socket 479, the 400 and 500 i would imagine would be socket-M as the Core and Core 2 are (is that right?)
-
Well, i am also quite sure, that celeron M 4&5 has same sockets as cd, c2d & cs. ****, if someone will borrow me a cd or cs with 533 i could try.

socket possibly but whether your bios can handle it is a different story. Are there bios updates for your laptop?
Which Celeron have you got right now? You could possibly put a faster one of the same line (400/500 etc.) in if you want more power. Certainly a Celeron-M 450 could not really be called slow. -
I have the latest bios (F22) right now. Right now I have celeron M 410. Celeron M 450 would be nice, but it costs same as the cheapest core duo...

Yeah true but I never said just coz the cpu fits it'll work!
I'd honestly stick with the same kind of cpu if not the same cpu! I was considering putting a Pentium-M in here but for the performance increase... i'mnot sure it's worth it. -
Next week i`ll try to borrow cd or cs with 533 and test...
Well, celeron M 450 2000MHz would be nice too...its as fast as Dothan 780 or smth?
btw, when will my signature be active? I updated a picture ~10min ago... -
your sig might be too large in size or dimmension.
-
It should update immediately. What kind of extension did you upload, how large was it? (both in bytes and pixels)
-
it was smaller than 500x100 and ~13kB
Edit: Is OK now -
