I think this forum fits better to my question so I'm posting here rather than Thinkpad board. Please move the thread if not.

So, I purchased brand-new Thinkpad W701 last year but didn't play with it until now. (i7-920XM and Nvidia Quadro 3800M)

I also have W700ds which is one generation older but it's not too far behind performance-wise. (QX9300 and Nvidia Quadro 3700M)

Both are top-of-the-line, maxed out specs.

The first thing I did was to run 3dMark06 to see how good it performs. W701 ended up with ~8500 which is lower than ~11500 that my W700ds does.

There's something very wrong here because W701 should be at least 10% faster than W700ds, so I was expecting at least ~13000 on 3dMark06.

I did all the usual tricks, inclding trying various Nvidia drivers, windows updates and all that but it didn't help. out of desperation, I even replaced CPU fan and repasted

VGA fan. Both seems to be physically working fine but the result on 3dMark06 didn't change.

Today, I tried some other benchmark tests for the first time. I tried SuperPI and Passmark Performance Test 8.0

Voila! W701 performed better than W700ds, as it should be. On SuperPI, W701 did at least 20% better than W700ds. On Performance 8.0 test, W701 did ~20% better on all tests,

inluding CPU and Video 2D and 3D tests.

Is it possible that 3dMark somehow is not measuring the performance of W701 correctly? notable is the fact that 3dMark06 does not correctly identify i7 920XM CPU - rather it

identifies the CPU as i7 - 950. I wonder if that causes the problem.

by the way, W701 is rock-solid stability-wise. I ran prime95 for 3 hours yesterday and it runs just fine, although the CPU keeps throttling up and down when the temp gets too hot.

if u guys know some definitive video benchmark that could tell for sure if there's any problem on my W701 or not, that would be great!

    thanks

Try a newer version of 3dmark.

i'm running the lastest version of 3dMark 06. as you know, it doesn't run 3dMark11 because of the lack of directx support.

3DMark has show itself to be not so good on anything even moderately recent. Have you thought about trying 3DMark Vantage instead? Your laptop is recent enough to be running a DX10 compatible GPU, that much is certain.

How on Earth did you manage to find a new W701 in 2013?

Like Tijo mentioned, I'm talking about 3dmark Vantage.
