    inspiron 1318 laptop CPU upgrade

    Hello dear community,

    Here is the configuration of the laptop:
    CPU: Celeron 560
    mother board model: 0c236d
    chipset: intel gm965

    I'm trying to find which CPU I can upgrade on this specific motherboard but it seems the information are not matching.

    1. In one hand, I found other 1318 laptop specifications because I thought that could lead me to the higher compatibility potential:

      2. T2390 https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Inspiron-1318.13664.0.html (but chipset is GMA 3100)

    2. In another hand, I tried to find other people upgrading ther 1318 laptop:

    2. I found this CPU Upgrade website: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Celeron_M/560.html but only the T2390 is in the list (which is only FSB 533Mhz, I would prefer a CPU with 800 Mhz)

    I recon, I'm a bit lost with all these informations and different advices.

    What would you recommand me?

    There's not much info about successful upgrades on this laptop. The first step would be to make sure you are on the latest BIOS which should support the most amount of CPU microcode possible. From browsing the Dell support site, it looks like version A06 is the latest for the Inspiron 1318: https://www.dell.com/support/home/u...254489&oscode=biosa&productcode=inspiron-1318

    My guess would be the same as Commander Wolf gave back in another thread you linked -- up to 800MHz FSB socket P (PGA478):

    Hard to figure why a Penryn like a T9300 wouldn't work in that motherboard. The official documentation says the following CPUs are supported:

    In the end you'll probably need to decide whether to take some risk with buying a CPU that you won't be able to use. Look for a seller with a lenient return policy or be prepared to resell the CPU if it doesn't work out. Good luck!

    There's two issues
    1. Socket
    2. Bios

    There was a refresh of the Core 2 line. Later processors (T8xxx and T9xxx, the doubled cache on the T9xxx is worth about 10% extra performance) used the more efficient 45nm process, had more cache, and had faster FSB of 1066Mhz, but needed an updated bios to work in older laptops (some of which were never made compatible). That's why the T9300 was a popular upgrade choice, it matched the 800fsb of the older chips and chipsets. But it still needed the microcode update.

    The refreshed chips had 3mb or 6mb of L2. If only 512kb/1/2/4mb are listed as supported, that would suggest the 3/6Mb refresh chips are not supported

    An upgrade to what the model was originally sold with is always the safest bet. T7xxx were the original Core 2 chips, T7100 (1.8ghz) through T7800 (2.6ghz) with the peak at X7900 (2.8ghz) or so. But they're all so cheap now, just grab whatever you can on ebay, be aware the higher clocked dual cores may overheat the cooling on a smaller notebook.

    I forgot to mention that my BIOS is already A06, I've done it a few months ago.

    Thank you for this, I couldn't find it before. That makes me more confident.


    I can find workstations with this type of CPU but I can't find laptop inspiron 1318. Where did you find this information please?

    If it comes down to a question of microcode, you can see which CPUIDs your BIOS supports with a program called intelmicrocodelist.exe -- but I'm unsure of whether it works with HDR files that come from a dell bios .exe with the -writehdrfile option.

    edit: You could also look at the BIOS HDR file with a hex editor, but from a quick (~5min) glance I couldn't find the offset with the CPUIDs

    Hello! Finally, I upgrade to a T7500 and it works like a charm!
