Hi, I am thinking of buying the baseline Lenovo 410p. it has Intel Core i5-4200M Processor (2.50GHz 1600MHz 3MB) and 500 gig 5200rpm harddisk.

I was hoping, if I could, add a SSD WITH teh existing 500gig harddisk, perhaps by removing the DVDROM?

You could put an SSD into an ultrabay caddy (yes that requires you to remove the DVD drive) but it won't perform at full speed. If you want the SSD to perform as it should put you HDD into the ultrabay and the SSD into the laptop itself.

Is that y410p specific? Newer ODDs might be SATA 2 but they are on the SATA 3 controller and you could connect a SATA 3 connector to it and run it at SATA 3 speeds.

Op, get the 879$ model. For only 100$, you get a far better screen, 2 extra gigs of RAM and a CPU that is more than twice as powerful
You have 3 options for adding a SSD to this laptop:
1) Buy a M.2 SSD and add it to the M.2 slot.
Pros: no loss of functionality, cons: limited SSD storage space to 128GB
2) Replace the main HDD with a 2.5 inch SSD.
Pros: Power consumption/noise improves, because of no hard drive. Cons: no HDD storage
3) Put a 2.5 inch SSD in the main bay, buy a caddy, put the HDD in the ultrabay
Pros: High Capacity. Cons: Can't use DVD drive.
Source: owner. I went with option 1).
Buy this one here:
