Incidentally, I was also contemplating adding a writer to my laptop, but at this point may instead go for an external model. In addition, to being a bit more robust, they also offer faster write speeds. -

Incidentally, Sony has updated their included (VAIO) WinDVD software for exactly the issues the OP mentions.
Has PowerDVD also issued an update? -

Get the latest update here:

Note that this may not run on a non Sony VAIO notebook. -

Could try the trial of AnyDVD HD. It's free for 21 days.

The only glitch I ever got was during a download of Adobe CS4 where the disc would skip and had to be reset a couple of times. However, I suspect that was due to it being the student edition which may be the reason it come with such a discount? A fair exchange considering the price--and as long as it works. -
nope some discs work some dont i dont care about ripping i just want the drive to recognize them those links all pertain to sony stuff my laptop is HP my burner is sony with latest firmware i also have powerdvd 9

Did you try the first link? I though the OP there took out the VAIO requirements out of the installer?
Good luck. -
yes i tried and no go anyone else with an hp that burns blurays? im guessing i need some sort of patch to recognize these types of discs
-
can anyone point me towards the HP MediaSmart DVD BD...i think this may be the issue
-
Are you using HP version of PowerDVD Ultra? If that is the case, it may be the problem. Try PowerDVD Ultra 30-Day Trial version from http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/trials/powerdvd/download_en_US.html
If it works, the problem is with your HP Player. -
i have powerdvd ultra thats better then the trial? other blurays have played on powerdvd 9

bmwnick,
Have you searched for firmware for your sony optiarc bd-5730s model?
This sounds like the firmware may be limiting your BD choices. -
yup no new firmware out

I may be tempted at this point to do a clean install - but that's just me.
Know that even with a clean install, if it really is software (or firmware, for that matter) that is causing this issue, then a clean install was just a nice way to waste some time.
But, like I said, that is still what I would do - just to eliminate any unknown variables.
Good luck. -
i can do a fresh install but just did a clean install 2 weeks ago is anyone here running an HP that works with all blurays? if yes what are u using?
-
-
ok fresh install still no go since this is an added bluray writer i dont have mediasmart if u can help me get it that would be great

On the other hand, you could always try using Window Media Center instead? The only reason I don't have it configured as my default player is that it really needs to have a TV tuner installed to get the best from that configuration. At the moment, I'm still looking for a dual tuner which I haven't been able to find yet.
install a bluray writer into HP laptop
