I own a lenovo thinkpad r31 and was just wondering if i have to reinstall xp after i add more RAM? or will the new RAM be automatically detected?

the new memory will be automatically detected. You will not need to reinstall the operating system.
You can also upgrade the processor without changing the operating system.
The only time you need to reinstall the operating system, is if you swap motherboards, or upgrade the harddrive

Your laptop uses Pentium 3M board type processors.
The fastest one is the 1.266GHz Pentium 3.
This is what you need:

You can probably get it cheaper on ebay
from what I can find your system has a maximum memory support of 1Gb (2 x 512mb Pc133 sodimm)
You can surely upgrade the harddrive, but the size may be limited. I highly doubt it will recognize drives over 137Gb.
You should download hdtune, and upload an image of the info tab
