Sorry for the newb question but thats what I am. I know very little about hardware and my brother knows practically nothing. Not knowing the difference he bought a new laptop with an integrated card. After finding out that he had junk, he wants to upgrade. Is it possible, and if so how difficult is it to upgrade to a card?

it's not junk unless you are doing something that requires powerful 3D rendering. if all you guys are doing is email/internet/chat/music/movies, then you have nothing to worry about and there will be zero performance difference between an integrated card and dedicated card.

if you guys use the computer for animating 90 min Pixar movies, than yeah, it's not going to work very well for that.
