In keeping with the precedent of @Dr. AMK, here's a thread to some of the intel related tech. I know some of you are not fans of 'Chipzilla', but there is some other interesting things they are working on.

For example, I ran across 'intel Vaunt' today ( maybe old news to some, but this is the first I've seen of it ):

Is it only a matter of time before augmented reality is a part of normal life?

Nice topic, but I already post them in my " All about New Scientific, Concept and Futuristic Technologies Thread", but it's nice to see senior member like you start to share with me the same vision :)

I didn't know that thread even existed. You are on top of everything newsworthy!!

    ----

The OP is a bit off topic since Vaunt isn't really a hardware component of a PC per se. This thread should stick to intel PC components like NICs, Optane, (Fake) RAID, iGPU, and the like.

Or the mods can end up deleting it.

Intel is Giving up on Xeon Phi - Eight More Models Declared End-Of-Life
    by W1zzard Tuesday, July 24th 2018 04:30 Discuss (29 Comments)
    https://www.techpowerup.com/246237/...on-phi-eight-more-models-declared-end-of-life
"Intel's Xeon Phi lineup, which started as Larrabee. has never seen any commercial success in the market despite big promises from the big blue giant that its programming model would be more productive for developers coming from x86. In the meantime, NVIDIA GPUs have taken over the world of supercomputing, with the latest generation Volta decimating Intel Xeon Phi offerings.
Intel's plan was to release a new generation of Xeon Phi called "Knights Hill", on a 10 nanometer process. However, constant delays ramping up 10 nm, paired with generally low demand for Xeon Phi, forced the company to abandon this project. Now the company announces that they are stopping production for eight currently shipping Xeon Phi models.
Affected are Xeon Phi 7210, 7210F, 7230, 7230F, 7250, 7250F, 7290 and 7290F, which are socketed CPUs that go into accelerator designs. The accelerator cards using a graphics card-like form factor were already cancelled a while ago. Interestingly, the change notice mentions "Market demand for the products [...] have shifted to other Intel products"... yeah, well, these products don't exist at Intel. The company has nothing comparable in their lineup, and the only successor I could think of is the GPU project that Raja Koduri and his minions are working on, which is expected not before 2019, probably later."

Not gonna lie I am excited for this. Bring on some competition. I hope Intel gives both AMD and Nvidia a swift kick in the sack. Nvidia has been milking their customers for far too long, and AMD, well their isn't much to say about their graphics lately and they're about to fall even further behind.

"Intel quits 5G modem business hours after Apple settles with Qualcomm"

    - Intel says it is canceling a line of smartphone 5G chips that had been slated for 2020 launches

    - Apple worries about becoming too dependent on a single supplier. So in recent years, Apple has encouraged Intel to expand its wireless chip offerings and offered Intel a significant share of its business for 4G chips in the iPhone.

    - ... recent reports have indicated that Intel was "missing deadlines" for the wireless chip that was slated to go into the 2020 model of the iPhone.

"Apple buys Intel’s smartphone modem business"

    - Apple will acquire “the majority” of Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion, the two companies announced today.

    - Intel won’t be getting out of the modem business entirely. It’ll still be able to develop modems for PCs, Internet of Things devices, autonomous vehicles, and seemingly anything that’s not a smartphone.

    - The acquisition means that Apple is now well on the way to producing its own 5G modems for its smartphones, rather than having to rely on Qualcomm for the hardware.

    https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/25/8909671/apple-intel-5g-smartphone-modems-acquisition

And now we know the rest of the story... (from my previous post)

IDK... Intel didn't give up their 5G development because their 5G was going gangbusters, Intel didn't give up 5G development because the future for 5G was a dim and desolate market. Intel gave up their 5G development because they messed it up and couldn't deliver.

I'm not so sure Apple got a good deal. More likely that 5G unit will be a rathole of cash and disappointment.

Of course it might be ok and Intel's screw-up this time was getting rid of their 5G development and selling it off.

Intel always gives up by first screwing up things like 5G development and then giving up. Intel does not have any of the Sticktoitiveness required for such ground breaking innovative development. Usually Intel doesn't have a willing buyer for their messes.

Apple should have done it on their own in the first place. Or, Apple should make up with Qualcomm and both of them should stop being silly.

Given the high thermals and high battery "destructive" nature of 5G being seen now at full throughput that it is being rolled out now Apple and all of the other vendors are going to have a tough time fitting full 5G throughput in thin and light products.

This is where Intel is excelling right now. Even as its 'performance' crown is a little tarnished. :)

The best tech in the world needs real-world use-flows to become 'best'.

Intel actually has that vision (even when AMD fanbois around them are chanting their death throes). Everyone is riding on their coattails, still.

What's coming on the mobile space is actually really exciting thanks to Intel. Nobody can deny that.

Even from October of last year, a Surface Pro i7, 16GB RAM and (shock) only 256GB SSD (along with OneDrive...) has transformed my digital notebook workflows. Instant-on, no hibernation (within 72 hours), lightest 'digital notebook' I've ever used, and so many other benefits (Pen, touch, Tablet mode and even the Surface Dial on this compact device).

To be honest? I'm actually hoping AMD hands Intel a whooping in the mobile space. That will really put a fire under Intel's a$$. :)

At the rate everything is moving today, I may need to be upgrading every few months to a year again. Good times! :D

The narrators words say the DG1 is fastest, but the graph shows it's the slowest... also these scores are all scraped as found not released, so who knows under what conditions each were tested.
    9600k vs 4800u vs 4700u vs Intel DGU.jpg
The Intel DG1 is a software development testbed, not a final product, so if it benchmarks less than an IGP that's not the point it's just a way to get a physical device into the hands of developers.

Intel Alder Lake S processor will bring ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture to the desktop
    https://mspoweruser.com/intel-alder-lake-s-processor-arm-big-little-architecture-to-desktop/

ARM’s big.LITTLE technology architecture uses two types of processor. ”LITTLE” processors are for maximum power efficiency while ”big” processors are for maximum compute performance. According to the recent leaks, the upcoming Intel Alder Lake S processor will use similar big.LITTLE architecture for better overall efficiency. According to the leaks, there will be 8 small cores and 8 big cores. So, it might be eight Golden Cove and eight Gracemont cores.

I just don't understand the logic of bringing ARM architecture CPU to stationary home/office based devices. What's the purpose for? Energy saving? Green power? Kinda out of logic when other stationary desktop components ain't that power efficient at all.
