im going to buy a notebook soon, and i think the final question on my list is whether the 7300 is noticeably better than the 7100. it might be 0.2GHz difference, but there's also a difference in the cache, 2MB(7200) vs 4MB(7300). i was wondering if the upgrade will make the difference.

i will mostly be using the laptop for writing web applications. will be running web/sql servers and perhaps a little bit of flash on the front end. my most graphics intense application will likely be photoshop. i'm going to do all the other stuff like word, powerpoint, etc. as well. i will be watching video's on the laptop, but not often.

i plan on using my notebook for the next 3~4 years. the upgrade from 7100 to 7300 for the laptop that i've decided on costs around $120, but that's because it's bundled with a hard drive upgrade from 5400rpm to 7200rpm.

on a final note, along with your thoughts, if you could direct me to any sites that show performance comparisons and other related data, that would be much appreciated. thanks!

No the 0.2GHz won't make too much of a difference unless ur encoding all the tiem. The T7300 is not only better than the T7200 because of its larger cache, but also because of its larger FSB 800mhz compared to 667mhz. or maybe its typo? lol

The $120 price difference is definitely worth it. 7200rpm drive makes everything much faster, and the 4MB L2 cache will be awesome for anything CPU-intensive.

Remember that .2 ghz is a full 10% of 2.0ghz

So it is a 10% increase in processor speed, from 2.0 to 2.2 ghz.

10% is not across the board only CPU intensive apps, from what you've written 7100 and 5400 should be fine. $120 is a nice price for those upgrades and if like some of us "more is better" that gives you the other answer.

    haha... more is better... sigh...
that's what i did with my dslr... haha
i do enjoy my gear though.
i think i'll go with the upgrade.
i'll just have one or two less trips to the bar for a couple of weekends.
maybe spend that time at starbucks with a couple of lattes instead. haha
thanks all, i think i'll just go with the better specs!
