hey all i am 1 click away from my purchase of a dell e1705 lappy with 7900gs. i am very behind the curve when it comes to my knowledge of intel cpus. i have used AMD procs exclusivly since the 486.

my question is this: i want 2gb ram but the ony 2gb option on the dell site is for 533mhz and the proc is a 667mhz fsb ..... will this work ok or would 1gb at 667mhz be a better fit. i assume i can add the 2nd gb to the machie at a later date .

    thanx

533Mhz or 677Mhz ither one will work fine. The FSB:Memory ratio will adjust according to the speed you install. The only difference will be the small performance difference in bandwidth.

It will run fine with 533MHz RAM, no problem.

I would check what Dell is charging you for 2GB and then see how much you can get it for aftermarket - $70-80/stick on Newegg.

i suffest u buy the 2GB 667mhz one since price difference is minimal and the coreduo CPU require a lot of memory bandwith for optimal performance. btw, u wouldn't be able to run the memory in dual channel if u buy the 1gb now and 1gb later technique.

oh i forgot to mention; the 533mhz RAM would work perfectly fine; but u wouldn't be able run the FSB to 667 FSB it will also run on 533mhz; the same speed as the RAM...

There's a thread around here somewhere which shows modern CPU's to gain almost no benefit from 667 vs 533 MHz memory.

    Er, why not?
I do that (with 2x512mb). As long as your memory is "symmetrical" (2x1GB, 2x512mb, 4x512mb or whatever), you should be able to run dualchannel
