if so, where ? Dell doesn't show this as a part for the m1730 when browsing for parts. looking at some laptop parts stores, but don't see anything blu-ray for dell laptops.

dell xps m1530 and m1730 come with the option to have a Blue-Ray burner. On the special rebates, the burner is often included on the laptop.
-
Get a SATA Blu Ray drive simple. It may not form to fit the "side" of your laptop but it will sure fit.
-
are you sure the Xps1730 uses a sata based optical drive?
I was not aware of any laptop which used them. Those slimline sata drives are primarily sold on newegg as replacements for dell and hp thinline desktops, which uses laptop style optical drives.
I am pretty sure you will need the E-IDE one, but this has to be confirmed before purchase
EDIT:
I cant seem to find any information on the interface of the optical drive, so if you can, remove your optical drive and post a picture of the port it has on its backside, and we can tell you if its the Ide or the Sata one you need

Or if we have the model number of the existing burner (from Device Manager) then we should be able to find the specs.
Slimline SATA optical drives do exist, but they are in the minority.

FWIW: The Optiarc BC-5600S Slim Slot-Load DVD±RW/BD-ROM Drive installed in the Studio1735 is sata...the XPS is probably old enough to where it is IDE but I would pull it out just to confirm before ordering a replacement... -
i know the dvd burners on the m1730 are samsung (TSSTCorp), so would those be IDE or SATA ?
these drives on newegg look interesting....but i'm not sure if the drive tray plate can be popped off to swap with the new drive....
anyway, just fishing around about it. let's see how much dell wants -
so has any m1730 owner done this swap yet ?

Changing the faceplate is usually quite easy. See here.
Having sorted out the issue of the interface then the challenge is to find a compatible blu-ray burner. If the interface is SATA then the Optiarc BC-5600S is one possibility and the LG GBW-T10N is another (which writes to Blu-ray discs).

looks pretty painless to do....there's a video on youtube, if you go to youtube type in m1730 drive and it should come up. if the bezels are standard mounting for these standard odd's, then i guess i can reuse my existing bezel although the blu-ray logo won't be on it.
the newegg link posted is just for blu-ray readers....
blu-ray burners would probably be something like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00116ALCO
is it possible to buy blu-ray burner for m1730 ?
