I have an Asus M51 with the Core 2 Duo T5550, but I want to upgrade my processor to one with at least 2.2 GHz. I'm going to have a friend who works on laptops do the actual switch when I get it so I don't end up with an expensive boat anchor, but before I do it, I need to choose a processor.

the question: will a T8300 work with my laptop? If not, what's my best bet?

I'm looking to spend less than $300, give or take a few dollars.

Yes it should work. Might want to look fo BIOS updates to get the max out of the T8300.

Second that ^. It should work, if the BIOS supports it. Check the BIOS updates' Release Notes for added enhancements/fixes.

T9300 is good as well, for tasks which actually utilise the extra 3MB Cache. And its retail version is around $300.

A T5850 is the only option since it is the same socket, and the same FSB of 667mhz. Any faster and your RAM, etc. will not be up to speed.

A t9300 at 2.5ghz or a t5600 at 2.6ghz is the same as the t8300 in terms of FSB, and Socket type. all three run at 800mhz, but yours is at 667mhz. a t8300 also has 3mb of L2 cache and the others have 6mb, and the t9300 and t9500 are better processors with more transistors. Though, I am not sure if you can run one with 800mhz. Download PC Wizard from CPUID and tell me the specs you see in mainboard, cpu, speed, etc. or download Sandra lite 2009.

For sure, though the t5850 will work. It is 2.16mhz.

Dude the T8300 will upclock the FSB to 800Mhz. So not an issue.

Well we already knew all the information you posted that mattered.

3GB is enough RAM for a 32bit OS I would not upgrade to 4GB

I actually think you will not benefit from an upgraded processor. Unless you currently use 100% of the processor, there is little point to an upgrade.

You are better off investing in a faster hard drive or more RAM if you want better performance.

What do you do with the laptop that makes you think you need a 2.2GHz processor?

i upgrade the t5550 in my gateway 6860 to a t8300 and have gotten better performance. converting videos went from about 45min to an hour, to about 20min. and i've also noticed better performance in games.

Yeah, I use it for games and graphic design work, so increased speed would be amazing. Which is why I was looking at the upgrade in the first place. Thanks, everyone. Your help is very appreciated!

If your BIOS can handle it, get the T8300. It is faster, produces less heat, and uses less power.

You won't notice much of an increase in gaming potential, but the graphic design work just MIGHT.
