If you'll be using your notebook on battery power often, then get a quality notebook cooler like a Zalman and just use it plugged in.

If you'll be cooking your notebook by gaming; remove the battery during your gaming sessions.

The key is to keep it cool.

If your battery options allow you to set the level of battery charge the battery will receive before the charging circuit cuts off, try to set it for around 40% or 50% when you'll be plugged in for a few days at a time.

Just remember to let the battery discharge to that level or below (around 30% is optimal) before you plug it it. ;)

Finally, enjoy your new notebook! :)

There's no perfect answer, but generally plugged in is better than not. If you have access to A/C power, keep the laptop plugged in. If you're concerned about wear on the battery, charge it to full and stick it in the fridge while on A/C. Personally, I like to have the battery in the laptop just in case power goes out or I accidentally kick the surge protector.

I'd suggest velcroing the power plug to the laptop to prevent it from getting accidentally yanked out while the battery is removed. Now, people say the battery keeps its charge best at 40% and should be stored at that charge, but that's roughly useless in my book. The oft-quoted 40% charge is for long-term storage purposes. Most people buy a laptop for portability, not space-saving concerns, so keep it charged to 100% so its ready to go when you need to go. The greater impact on battery capacity is not the charge in the battery when stored, but the temperature it's stored at, so if your laptop generates lots of heat, pull the battery out and set it aside, but close at hand.

Not if it is not (actively) charging it and not if the battery charge level is between 40 to 50%.

And, the battery is as cool as possible too...

With your intended uses; just use a notebook cooler and you should be good.

Oh, will you ever use it on battery power?

You'll lose capacity faster having it plugged in all the time. However, if you're like me and pick it up while it's turned on, even when I'm conscious of the fact that the battery is out, I'll still rip out the power cord when I'm in a hurry, thereby instantly shutting down the laptop.
