My laptop charger works, the problem is the plug on the side of the laptop is not working right and will not fully accept the charger.
I have been told it would cost $400 to fix it. Does this sound right? Any other way to charge a laptop?
    The laptop is an HP.

Depends on what kind of HP it is. MOST newer style HP have the charger on a cable and it plugs into the motherboard, and that part is literally 30-40 bucks + labor. 400 sounds like an extreme rip off, most decent repair shops can do board level repair of the jack or resolder on another one for ~150.

I don't know. But even if it was true I'd never spend that much unless my laptop was worth ten times that. In any event, $400 just seems exorbitant to repair anything the only has to do with a malfunctioning plug.
If there isn't there should be. Reminds me something to add to the 21st thread. Although I'm sure someone will tell me there's a manufacturer that offers an external charger already?

In fact, now that I think about it, I remember seeing a device like that in the public library. It charged several laptop batteries at once. Not sure if that would be practical for home use though.
