my alienware area-51 m9750 laptop has 1 54mm expresscard slot
I am wondering, what exact thing can I put in it that will not go past the edge of the notebook? I want to put something there that will not be more than 54mm

    Just for kicks?

Card readers and SSDs will fit and not protrude.

Considering how many expresscards are for adding functionality like eSATA, Wireless, etc..., there aren't many things, but an SSD might be one to consider:

This 5-in-1 card reader also sits "NEARLY" flush, according to reviewers:

And this one does sit flush, although it could just be different perspectives on "flush":

SO, the short answer is: an ExpressCard SSD or a card reader.

hmm... The two ratings on the card reader were a 1/5 and a 2/5
I think I will get an expresscard ssd when the price drops, and get a 2nd 2.5" sata hard drive
    thanks
