Last night my laptop went into hibernization because my battery was about to die. I tried turing it back on and it booted to a blank screen that flashed my desctop back ground and went blank again. I tried shuting it down and rebooting. It booted up but I had no mouse control and the logon sound would not go away. It sounded like a CD skipping. I tried to shut it down again but it would not let me. I removed the battey thinking my laptop didn't realize I was on ac power. I still could not shut down and the sound was still there. I became very desperate, I pulled the plug. It turned off oviously. I felt the bottom of the laptop. It was hot but not abnormally hot. I let the laptop cool off while I rigged up a homemade laptop cooler.(I put my laptop on top of my drumsticks and put a deskfan behind the laptop so it would blow air underneath it.) This may have fixed the problem because it booted up fine and I used it for 4 hours. It also ran the coolest its ever run, 29C for the CPU and 31C for the HD.
Could this have been a heating problem or just an unexplained phenomenon?

Can anyone give me some insight on this?

It probably had something to do with hibernation and the overheating. As long as it doesn't do it again I wouldn't worry too much.

If it does it again what should I do? I want to be prepared just in case.

If it happens again under the same circumstances, I wouldn't worry too much. If it happens randomly under different circumstances... well, you got me.

How hot is too hot? Lately my HD has been reaching 49-52C. The fan usually kicks on around 52-53C. A waring will pop up at 55C but it hasn't reached that yet. Would a cooling pad be advised? If so which one?

I don't know what number to give to "too hot", however in a more qualitative way, if it's uncomfortable to touch, it's too hot. There tends to be alot of discussion on cooling pads in the Accessories forum, I bet someone there could give you a good recommendation.
