got a friends advent c900 roma to look at. it wont even get to the log on screen before it reboots. then continues in a boot loop.took it apart and with in seconds the northbridge is really hot.god knows how hot it is but i licked my finger and dabbed it on. and it dissapeared straight away...like a hot iron.......so i guess thats the problem??.

That doesn't sound good. You can try sticking some aluminum (not copper) heatsinks on it to try and cool it down (or even better, copper base with aluminum fins), but I'm going to make an educated guess that if it's started getting that hot, it's probably blown. Check with an electronics engineer.

Yes, that's the problem! The cause is a whole different story. Have you checked other components to see if there is poor heat dissipation? The heat spread might be improperly allocated, and therefore is passing over the north bridge too much.

i have just the mobo on my bench##( not in its case)## with just the screen and ac adaper plugged in. everythings cool. when i power it up the northbridge is more or less instantly overheated...with in 4/5 seconds. something i failed to mention. originally it wouldt boot. i noticed that the pins in one of the usb ports were bent and twisted up.i tryed to straighten them as best i could but it still didt boot. i then unplugged the usb from the mobo and then it started the boot loop. so im wondering if one of his kids trashed the usb causing a short circit when powered up blowing something on the mobo....i think its a lost cause anyway.

You can try keeping the northbridge cool and see if it boots up normally without restarting.

The laptop surely use to work fine at some point, if indeed the NB is over heating NOW it would be best to find the casue and be sure there is no BGA failure due to the over heating.

With a heatsink. There surely had to be some form of cooling for it.

not matter north or south if it's getting hotter than it used to there is reason for that.

Um could you try disconnecting all peripherals (USB mouse, etc.) from the laptop and try again? The SB controls the relatively slower busses of which, USB devices the the like are the only ones you can really try troubleshooting as the others are all on the mobo.
