how do can i back up all data on my laptopp?i have an idea that i might partition the the laptop hard disk and all the data backed on the 2nd partition OR MAYBE USE A SERVER and back the data onto an external usb drive.
But i don't know how to do this and which of the two options is better?

If the laptop hard drive completely fails, then having backup data on a different partition would be no use as you would not be able to access your data from it. What backup methords you should depends on how much you need to backup, and how important the stuff is to you.

Burning to a CD and DVD is the quickest and easiest methord if you want to backup a few office files. If you want to backup more stuff including media, then go for a external USB/FireWire HDD.

Another option if you want to backup more than 1 computer on a single device is a NAS (Network Attached Storage) Drive, and you send your files over by setting up a simple home network, and popping the files over via Ethernet which is the simplest type of "server backup".
