my laptop just shuts down whenever i do something it doesn't like. it happens at diffrent temperatures. the usual HDD temp is 45C and the maximum it ever got to was 47C. i read about people having temperatrues over 50 and they never complained about shut downs so i'm thinking it can't be overheating. it's supposed to be ok up to 55 right? last night i left it running to defragment it and this morning found it shut down. i can't even run the antivirus system scan cause it shuts down half way through.
can anyone tell me what to do? what might be the problem?

firstly what laptop/specs and how old is it?

What about CPU and GPU temps? have you monitored them? if not, use HWMonitor

sounds like what my step-dad's PC did when the Hard disk began to fail...

have you ran a scandisk or defrag??

if the PC will run long enough.. download THIS and run it... it will diagnose hard drive problems

run a scan disk from dos (during boot/ floppy / usb stick) -recovery bad sectors on.
