i mangled the stock dvd-rom/cd-rw in my hp pavilion ze5170
and wish to implant a dvd burner, preferably a slim pioneer
    (dvr-k16/ko5 x8) or panasonic (uj-845-b 8x) machine. are they
compatible? are any dvd burners compatible with the ze5170?
hp makes a multibay dvd+rw (part#dg189b) but it seems that
it is compatible only with their newer laptop models...

You may want to email UltraDrives.com. They specialize in laptop drives and may know what will fit. I personally like NEC drives and have put one in an old Presario. Sometimes the old bezel does not match the new one and can be a problem. Master/Slave can also be an issue.
