so before i get berated for posting this off topic, i did, in my defense, post my qualms to the correct spot under hp envy but it wasnt to any avail as nobody responded. and this does have to do with hardware, as im having issues with mine.

when exiting the subway my laptop got jostled around and, in a heroic act of kindness, decided to bravely throw itself in front of a large metal safety tress and bravely save me from a mild amount of physical discomfort. anyway. now the screen wont turn on upon boot up. it flickers for a moment when the hp screen comes on and then turns blue for the windows load animation. then it briefly displays my desktop before turning back off. in the brief moments its functioning however everything looks fine, with no visible signs of damage.

the interesting thing is that when hooking it up to the hdmi out, everything displays normally on my tv.

give this, i dont think its the video card. nor do i think its the monitor. is there some sortve further piece of hardware that couldve potentially been damaged that i dont know about? hp wants 350 dollars for a fix that ive a feeling wouldnt cost a quarter of that.

    thanks a lot.

    thanks in advance.

could be the LCD side isn't working and then the gfx card defaults to the hdmi, because of loose damaged internal vga cable or damaged LCD controller.

so we can assume that you would have said bsod if that's what you meant and the computer functions like it did before the subway incident but for the lcd? if the computer boots and otherwise runs normally, consider opening it up for a visible inspection and/or replace the display.

ironically, i just replaced my buddy's pavilion display two weeks ago--a personal lcd swap first for me:

the top is the dead one. the only connection to the display itself (whose entire contents are shown below) is that two-pin connector.

the whole job took about three hours. two sessions, one to "diagnose" that it couldn't have been anything but the lcd and one after receiving a $75 replacement from lcdsforless.com. (side note, a recent thread touted this company as a scam. although they do have terrible BBB reviews and took 14 days to ship even though 3-5 standard shipping was purchased, patience and luck seem to be key to a positive buying experience.)

like you said, if you have hp fix it it's totaled. so your options are doing that anyway, buying a new machine, or trying this. not too much to lose and it's worth the hardware troubleshooting experience.

Wait what? Why on earth did you disassemble the LCDs? That was totally unnecessary as far as I can tell.

Haha, nice. I just disassembled a 13.3" LCD, funny how those things are basically just taped together.

Anyway its worth mentioning LCD disassembly is generally not recommended, you can get dust in the screen and whatnot.

to be sure, do you mean the display assembly/housing or the LCD itself? on mobile earlier today i didn't notice you said "LCD s" and to clarify, i only took apart the dead one. definitely not recommended to disassemble the actual LCD. not even sure how safe that was between the "don't touch!" warning label and the strange dusty/sooty substance that rubbed off from all over one of the films.
