so my laptop stopped getting power from its charger for some reason. I checked and the charger works so the lappy is just messed up. If my laptop is broken, how can I get stuff off of my hard drive?

You can just remove your harddrive before you send it in for repair.

I had the same thing happen to my same era Compaq. The power connector disconnects from the motherboard. Even though its a solder job to fix they'll charge you for a new motherboard and put in a used one they already re-soldered.

The option I went with was to get a media cable and charge mine through the expansion port. It worked, but it sucks lugging around another cable.

I'd imagine that you can hook up the drive to another computer as an external device to pull files from it (provided you have a USB hd enclosure).

No. You would copy the files from it as you would a data dvd.

    Yes.

As for the enclosure, they are handy to have. I have an Apricorn one that I use for cloning, but they can be used for many other purposes. Just be sure to get one that is the correct type for your drive (SATA or PATA).

IDE is pata. Just make sure it is a 2.5 notebook enclosure and not a 3.5 one for desktop drives.
