ok, i have no idea where the problems are in this computer, but all i know is that it can barely boot up anymore. not sure if its a virus, i would think not, cause our university requires you to have an anti-virus and be up to date, or else you cant access the internet (clean access...which i hate by the way). i have a spyware tool running right now, but i dont think spyware would prevent my computer from starting up

i've tried multiple times, and every time i boot up, i get the blue screen of death, and i have to hold the power button down. when i go to "use last known good configuration", i still get the BSOD. any ideas what could be up?

by the way, im writing this message in safe mode

    RAM? Try memtest86
HD? Try to get some SMART diagnostics tool.

while in Safe MOde, check msconfig for your start-up programs. Obviously something is wrong with one of those. If you don't experience problems in safe mode, this kind of rules out memory problems but it won't hurt to do a RAM check.

What does the BSOD say? That is the most important. Chances are that one of your drivers has gone corrupt or something, and launching the driver when XP starts is causing the BSOD.

It must be some driver since you can boot in safe mode. Try repairing windows with bootable XP SP2 CD. Go through install and when it asks you for installing new Windows say yes and on a next screen when it finds existent windows on your C disk press R for Repair. It will do the PNP again and install all devices with default drivers. It will leave your settings and programs as they were. You will be able to boot again most probably. But you will have to install all MS patches again.

Otherwise backup your important data in safe mode and make a clean reinstall. That always helps.

    Cheers,
    Ivan

ill try and get a picture of whats wrong soon

also, if i do a repair, will i have to reinstall all my drivers? ie- video card, sound card, network adapter? and will all my data be safe?

The repair install ONLY touches System files -- all your programs, data, and drivers should be safe. If it is a driver issue, as the others have suggested, I'm not sure the repair install would fix your problem, but it won't hurt anything to try it.

well, i just ran an error checking, and nothing was wrong. the error i get is:
    Page_Fault_In_Nonpages_Area

not exactly sure what that means, but it wont go away. and i cant even tell what drivers are messed up if it is
