how universal are the connectors on laptop lcd panels?
i have a few laptops taken apart and the actual connectors are the same.. they have a 2 prong for the backlight.. and then the wider 20 pin ish... connector for the actual video signal..
i tried taking the 12.1 lcd from a dell c400 and putting it in an asus m5n.. it doesn't work..
the displays differ.. the circuit board and such.. but i honestly think they should be relatively interchangeable..
i understand they have different chipsets and such on the circuit boards.. i am thinking that maybe if i found diagrams for the two different pinouts, i could modify a flex cable to make it work..
what are people's thoughts on this? i need an lcd for this asus.. but i am not going to spend any significant amount of money on it..
also, does anyone know of database or chart or something that says which lcd panels are at least compatible with one another?
thanks
scott

hmmm probably not since this sort of thing is probably not supposed to be done. Panels differ in alot of ways even if the connectors are the same it would require alot of diffrent things to have it work correctly.
To me saying it should work just because the connectors are the same is no diffrent than saying a ATI Radion x2900xt should work with the same drivers as the Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX just because they use the same pci-e connection. -
i realize what you are saying.. but at the same time, it wouldn't make too much sense for lcd manufacturers to create different lcd panels for each model or brand of laptops.. instead i am thinking that the lcd manufacturers make the displays, and then the laptop manufacturers build the laptops to work with the displays that are out there..
i realize that the two i have are incompatible.. but i am trying to find one that is compatible.. there has to be more than 1 model of 1 brand of lcd that works in my laptop..
i can't find specs on it though.. contrast ratio, response time, etc.. i don't know if these are really that important though or if it is more of the chipset used in the displays... -

Probably the chipset, is your screen broken or somthing? or are you just looking for a better screen?
You may want to consult ebay and see if you can find a replacment, or talk to your manufactuer.
I suppose from there your out of luck unless your at home and use an external monitor. -
i have a laptop with a broken screen.. i would like a better one.. but i don't think that will work.. also i haven't seen any 12.1 inch screens in a 3:4 ratio that are higher than 1024x768 anyways...
i tried ebay.. but there is virtually nothing if i look for that specific laptop.. i can find it on websites but they want $250 or more..
also, that laptop in your avatar looks like the one i am trying to get the screen for.. is that just coincidence?
lcd general, but advanced question
