So the right half of my display was dim at first, but would slowly come back to normal whenever i unplugged the laptop and ran from battery power, but after a while strange high pitched noises would start coming from the screen until I plugged it back in (after which the right side started dimming up again). Lately thought the right side of the screen has gotten even dimmer and has turned a slight shade of red, and the lit up area has shrunk, also the high pitched noises can now be heard from the screen whether the laptop is plugged in or not. What I'm trying to figure out is whether this is a problem with the inverter or the CCFL backlight, or something else, or both? My inverter model is 4810L (the full number is 4810L-0034A), and my display model is:

    LP171WU1 17.0"
    TL A2
    REV A00

This is a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

    Thanks in advance.

High pitched noises and a tinge of red... probably a backlight problem. Doubt it's both; backlight is usually the first thing to go in an LCD assembly.

I would think it's a backlight problem too - but it seems strange that one end of the backlight is working and another isn't...?
